Cognitive & Neuroprotection

Selank

Synthetic Tuftsin Analog

10 mg lyophilized powder + 2 mL sterile water

SECognitive & Neuroprotection

Overview

Selank is a synthetic heptapeptide analog of the endogenous immunomodulatory peptide Tuftsin (Thr-Lys-Pro-Arg), with an additional Pro-Gly-Pro (PGP) stabilizing sequence. Developed at the Institute of Molecular Genetics of the Russian Academy of Sciences alongside Semax, Selank has been extensively studied for its anxiolytic and cognitive-enhancing properties.

Tuftsin, the parent tetrapeptide, is a naturally occurring fragment of immunoglobulin G (IgG) heavy chain that plays a role in immune regulation. By combining Tuftsin with the PGP extension, Selank gains both enhanced stability and expanded neurotropic activity beyond the parent peptide's immunomodulatory effects.

Mechanism of Action

Selank's mechanism involves modulation of multiple neurotransmitter systems, with particular emphasis on GABAergic and serotonergic signaling. The peptide enhances GABA-mediated inhibitory neurotransmission by increasing GABA receptor sensitivity and potentially modulating GABA transaminase activity, contributing to its anxiolytic properties.

In the serotonergic system, Selank influences the metabolism of serotonin by affecting tryptophan hydroxylase activity and serotonin transporter function. It also modulates the expression of enkephalins — endogenous opioid peptides that contribute to mood regulation and stress response.

The Tuftsin-derived component provides immunomodulatory effects through enhancement of phagocytic activity, NK cell function, and cytokine balance, potentially linking immune function to neurological effects.

Research Applications

  • Anxiolytic mechanism research
  • GABAergic signaling modulation
  • Immune system modulation via tuftsin pathways
  • Cognitive function and memory studies
  • Emotional stability and stress response
  • Enkephalin expression regulation
  • Neuroimmune interaction research

Handling & Reconstitution

  1. 1Allow the vial and sterile water to reach room temperature (15–25°C).
  2. 2Using a sterile syringe, withdraw the appropriate volume of sterile water.
  3. 3Inject the water slowly along the inside wall of the vial — do not spray directly onto the powder.
  4. 4Gently swirl the vial until the powder is fully dissolved. Do not shake vigorously.
  5. 5Once reconstituted, store at 2°C – 8°C. Protect from light.
  6. 6Use within 28 days after reconstitution.
  7. 7Do not freeze reconstituted solution.
